St. Pierre or Serra??? Our UFC 83 predictions reveal all…
April 17, 2008

UFC 83 is fast approaching so it’s time to make our picks and try to win some money! We hit a cold spot with our picks for UFC 82, but came back on UFN hitting some large underdogs (+200’s) and churning out a small profit.
UFC 83 presents some very interesting matchups because of the odds that have been posted. Most of the fights are pretty lopsided, and there aren’t a whole lot of opportunities for small favorites and small underdogs.
Here’s MMAbettingblog.com’s predictions for UFC 83….
Georges St. Pierre (-500) vs. Matt Serra (+350)
- This fight is going to be a great fight to watch. There’s a nice storyline behind it with the huge upset from last time, and Matt Serra is out to prove he belongs at the top of this weightclass. However, GSP seems to have kicked his game up a notch since they last met and he’s been operating on a whole ‘notha level. With that said, I can’t possibly back either fighter in this bout with my hard earned cash. St. Pierre is a great fighter no doubt. He’s one of the top 3 in the world pound for pound. But backing someone at -500 after they have already lost to someone is just not a smart bet. Matt Serra looks to be a good play here, but I think there’s too much going against him. GSP is hungrier than ever, fighting with the home crowd behind him, and he’s been training with more intensity for this fight than I’m sure he ever has before. At +350 Serra would be my pick if I HAD to bet because of the value. However, I’m gonna pass and say St. Pierre wins in the 2nd round.
- My Bet: No bet
Rich Franklin (-350) vs. Travis Lutter (+285)
- This is the matchup that really intrigues me for UFC 83. Rich Franklin is under an enormous amount of pressure to perform in this bout. His last two losses to Anderson Silva really put a damper on him. However after seeing how good Silva really is, there’s not as much of a knock on Rich anymore. Travis Lutter on the other hand has amazing ground skills between his wrestling and jiu jitsu experience and will probably give Franklin some problems. I don’t think these two guys are that far apart when it comes to talent. At +285 Lutter is a great play here.
- My bet: $100 on Lutter at +285 to win $285
Michael Bisping (-350) vs. Charles McCarthy (+280)
- Michael Bisping comes into this fight after a loss to Rashad Evans at UFC 78. Before that, Bisping defeated Matt Hamil, Elvis Sinosic and Eric Schafer. While Bisping has an amazing 14-1 record he has had some VERY close calls in his past wins, especially with Hamil. I’m still not sold on Rashad as a big time fighter, so him losing to Evans is a slight knock on him. Charles McCarthy is 10-4 in his career, with a 3-2 record in his past five fights. Chuck is a heck of a fighter, who has a great ground game that might give Bisping some problems. At +280 Im gonna bite on Charles McCarthy and throw a few bucks on him.
- My bet: $50 on Charles McCarthy to win $140
Nate Quarry (-315) vs. Kalib Starnes (+250)
- I don’t really have an opinion one way or another on this fight. I think the line is pretty much right on. Quarry should win this fight pretty easily, but I don’t think there’s any value with Nate at -315.
- My bet: No bet
Mac Danzig (-550) vs. Mark Bocek (+400)
- No bet here either. Mac will win this fight easily, but I’m not supporting anyone at -550 unless they’re fighting me. It’s just bad betting to back favorites this big.
- My bet: No bet

Ultimate Fight Night 13 picks and predictions
April 1, 2008
I’ve been going over the UFN 13 odds for the past two hours and I can’t understand how some of these underdogs have such good odds. I really can’t find value in any of the favorites for the night besides Din Thomas, so this looks like its going to be a great night for betting the dogs…. The following odds are from Bodog
Joe Lauzon (+160) vs. Kenny Florian (-200)
- Joe Lauzon is getting some great odds here at +160. He might have big ears, but the kid can fight. Kenny Florian is grabbing the majority of action in this bout at the sportsbooks, so I like siding with Joe here for that reason as well… I dont put as much stock into Joe training with BJ Penn as the others bettors seem to be, but I think it should help him a bit. These are some solid odds on Joe…
- My bet: $50 on Joe Lauzon (+160) to win $80
Karo Parisyan (-180) vs. Thiago Alves (+150)
- I’ll conceed that I think Karo is a better fighter than Thiago here. But to have Thiago at +150 is giving Karo way too much credit. Thiago has some solid standup game and his kicks are very, very solid. I think at +150 Thiago is a great bet…
- My bet: $50 on Thiago Alves(+150) to win $75
Din Thomas (-180) vs Josh Neer (+150)
- Din Thomas has a great ground game, especially his jiu jitsu game. His takedowns and standup are also very solid. I think he’s better than Josh Neer in pretty much every technical category. I figured Din was going to be a -220 or so favorite for this fight, so a -180 line offers some good value for us.
- My bet: $100 on Din Thomas(-180) to win $55
Other good bets
- James Irvin +190
- Anthony Johnson +205 (How is Tommy Speer a -265 fav)
- Tim Boetsch +145

20 gambling terms every MMA bettor should know
March 30, 2008
MMA Betting Blog has put together a list of some of the main sports gambling terms that apply to betting on MMA fights. These will help clear up any questions you might have when it comes to betting jargon.
- Bookie - Usually a person who accepts local bets. Sometimes people on the web refer to sportsbooks as bookies. This is more prevalent in European areas.
- Chalk - The favorite in the fight, or the guy at - odds.
- Dog - The underdog in a fight, or the guy at + odds. Underdogs can potentially have negative odds if its something like -115 vs. -105.
- Edge - Our competitive advantage when betting on a fight. Sometimes this is because of knowing more information than the linesmaker, and sometimes this is because of the odds posted for the fight.
- Even money (EVN) - When a bet’s odds are 1:1 or +100 this is even money. You aren’t paying any juice on the bet.
- Favorite - The favorite is the fighter that is expected to win the bout. The sportsbooks designate this fighter with a negative sign infront of the moneyline. (Ex. Chuck Liddell -145)
- Handicapping - This is the research and strategy you put into making a bet. There are many different ways to handicap a fight. Most bettors use a few methods and stick with what works for them.
- Handle - This is the amount of total bets taken on a fight or event. This usually refers to the total amount of bets that the sportsbook “handles”.
- Limit - The maximum bet that an online sportsbook will allow a bettor to place on a fight.
- Line - Another name for the odds for a fight.
- Moneyline - Odds for MMA fights are expressed in terms of money. So a moneyline of -145 means that for every $1.45 you bet, you would win $1.
- Odds - A numerical value determined by the sportsbook that shows the likelihood of each fighter winning the fight.
- Opened (opening line) - This is the odds that were set when the line was first put out for betting.
- Parlay - A combination of bets in which all of the fighters must win in order for you to win the bet. In return, you get better odds for your bet, such as 6-1 on a 3 team (fighter) parlay.
- Prop bet - A specific wager on an outcome in a fight. Take for example in boxing, there are prop bets on which round the fighter will end the bout. If you choose the round correctly you get paid out at higher odds than a normal bet.
- Push (draw) - When a fight does not have a winner declared it’s marked as a draw, and all bets are refunded.
- Sportsbook - The website or company that takes your bets for fights.
- Square - Someone who is a total beginner at sports betting. They usually bet on favorites 95% of the time.
- Totals bet - In MMA betting you may bet on the over/under the amount of rounds you think a fight will last. The sportsbook sets a total, and you then bet over or under than number.
- Underdog - The fighter who has + odds. This means if you bet on the fighter and they win, you’ll receive more than your original bet back. So if you bet $100 on Tito Ortiz at +135 and he wins, you’ll win $135 in profit.

Roy Jones is a HUGE favorite over UFC champ Anderson Silva
March 24, 2008

The line is finally out. If Anderson Silva and Roy Jones Jr. go head to head this year in a boxing match, expect to lay some heavy chalk if you are backing Mr. Jones. The guys at Bodog took the reigns and have put out the initial betting line for the event.
- Roy Jones Jr (-2800)
- Anderson Silva (+1400)
Yikes! I knew this was going to be a huge lopsided line, but I didn’t really think it was going to be -2800. If you’re unfamiliar with betting lines, this equals out to Roy Jones being a 28-1 favorite. The average betting line for a fight usually ranges from -200 to about -500.
The odds for the fight are only good if the bout takes place in 2008. There’s also a $100 limit on the fight at Bodog. Im sure we’ll see some other online sportsbooks follow suit and post a line this week as well. Stay tuned…
Leave a comment about the fight/odds. There’s probably some diverse opinions out there about this fight.

Frank Shamrock a -220 favorite? - Strike Force 8 odds
March 19, 2008
Frank Shamrock and Cung Le are entering StrikeForce 8 as the headlining bout on March 29th. I’m a bit surprised that Frank is listed at (-220) for this fight, because I really think he should be about a (-185) or so favorite.
