Predictions for UFC Fight Night 18
March 28, 2009
For the main event we have our Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann prediction page
Ryan Bader vs. Carmelo Marrero
- For a detailed prediction of this fight visit our Bader vs. Marrero prediction page
Pats Prediction
- TUF 8 winner Ryan Bader will have a very stiff test as he enters the octagon for the second time. He will be facing Carmelo Marrero, who will be returning to the UFC after leaving for almost two years. Even though Bader is undefeated thus far, Marrero has faced much tougher competition. I see Marrero’s size and strength being the difference in this fight. Marrero by unanimous decision.
Tyson Griffin vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
- For a detailed prediction of this fight visit our Griffin vs. Dos Anjos prediction page
Pats Prediction
- This will be a very explosive and entertaining fight as Tyson Griffin and Rafael Dos Anjos go to war. In his UFC debut Dos Anjos was on the wrong end of a Jeremy Stephens punch resulting in a nasty KO. Dos Anjos is very tough and definitely has a career int he UFC. Unfortunately Griffin’s great training and experience will prove to be the difference in this match up and will take a unanimous decision victory.
Junie Browning vs. Cole Miller
- For a detailed prediction of this fight visit our Browning vs. Miller prediction page
Pats Prediction
- Junie left a bad taste in my mouth with his childish behavior on the show. He went on to win his debut fight against Dave Kaplan. He will now be facing Cole Miller who is a much more complete fighter and has taken to heart the trash talk that Junie has been dishing out. With that said Miller will display is well rounded skills on Junie and submit him in round one.

Fight Night 18: Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann Prediction
March 27, 2009
Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann
The main event of the evening pits WEC’s final welterweight champion, Carlos Condit, against the dynamic Martin Kampmann, newly moved down to 170 pounds after a vicious lambasting at the hands of Nathan Marquardt. Kampmann will no doubt be looking to assert his authority in the smaller division, while Condit will be attempting to prove that he is ready for more than small-show gold.
Condit is the definition of well-rounded, with dangerous striking that is only eclipsed by his stellar submission game. One of his most notable advantages is his height and reach. At a rangy 6′1″, Condit has confoundingly long arms for the division, which makes it difficult for most welterweights to stand and box with him. Some of Condit’s biggest wins are against “Charuto” Verissimo, Frank Trigg, Brock Larson, Carlo Prater, and Hiroyuki Miura. One of his big strengths going into this contest is his adaptability.
Kampmann has an extremely potent and varied offense, but Condit’s well-rounded skill set means that he will never be a fish out of water, no matter where the fight winds up.Kampmann, who trains at Las Vegas’ Xtreme Couture gym, put together quite an impressive resume at Middleweight, garnering wins over the likes of Jorge Rivera and Thales Leites, but decided to drop a weight class after Nathan Marquardt put on a 1 minute striking clinic in which Kampmann played the role of punching bag.
He was impressive in his welterweight debut, overwhelming Alexandre Barros with strikes midway through the second round. Like Condit, Kampmann is good both standing and on the ground, and will probably enter the Octagon with a sizable advantage both in weight and wrestling skill.
Ultimately this fight will come down to two things: body type and cardio. While Condit’s reach advantage and ranginess may prove problematic for Kampmann in the standup, Kampmann’s more powerful and compact frame should help him secure takedowns and maintain control. That simple fact, coupled with Kampmann’s vastly superior training regimen and training partners, should be enough to turn the tide of this one in Kampmann’s favor.
I see him physically controlling Condit on his way to a unanimous, but hard-fought, decision.
Fight Night 18: Ryan Bader vs. Carmelo Marrero Prediction
March 27, 2009
Ryan Bader vs. Carmelo Marrero
The second fight of the evening is a Light Heavyweight showdown between undefeated Ultimate Fighter 8 winner Ryan “Darth” Bader and American Top Team’s Carmelo “The Fury” Marrero.
Bader surprised most pundits when he defeated highly-regarded Vinny Magalhaes to earn the UFC contract at the Ultimate Fighter 8 finale. Marrero, a skilled fighter who has fluctuated in weight, will be looking to erase the memory of his last UFC stint, where he suffered back to back losses to Gabriel Gonzaga and Wilson Gouveia.
Ryan Bader, although still early in his career, has shown that he has what it takes to succeed. He has good standup, good submissions and submission defense, and he has a quality training camp at Arizona Combat Sports, alongside the likes of CB Dolloway and Cain Velasquez. Before beating Magalhaes, though, Bader’s seven wins came against opponents that were completely off the radar on tiny shows. Bader has all the physical tools, but the fact that a middle of the road guy like Marrero is a massive step up for him in competition says a lot about his lack of experience.
Marrero has definitely faced much better competition than Bader, but the downside for him is that he lost those fights. Despite being skilled in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Marrero was submitted by Gabriel Gonzaga and Wilson Gouveia, who has since moved down to 185 pounds. Marrero’s most notable win is a narrow split decision over heavyweight Cheick Kongo. Marrero’s training camp is top notch, but he has a tendency to look lacksadaisical in the ring.
Even so, Marrero’s size and strength advantage should prove too much for the young Bader. Marrero should win a boring decision, maintaining top control and doing little damage.
Fight Night 18: Tyson Griffin vs. Rafael Dos Anjos Prediction
March 27, 2009
Tyson Griffin vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Two extremely promising Lightweight prospects are set to clash in the form of Tyson Griffin and Rafael Dos Anjos. Both men have a world of promise, but both are also coming off losses, which means this one should be extremely hard-fought and competitive.
Dos Anjos, a skilled grappler from Brazil’s Gracie Fusion camp, came into the UFC with high expectations after an impressive career on smaller shows and in Japan. Those expectations were blown out of the water, though, when he suffered one of the most memorable and vicious knockouts in UFC history at the hands of Jeremy Stephens. Even so, Dos Anjos still has all the skills that made him such a hot prospect in the division to begin with, most notably a very dangerous submission attack.
Griffin is well-known as a wrestler who likes to ride fights out on top, so he may well be playing right into Rafael’s gameplan by shooting for the takedown. Xtreme Couture’s Griffin is no stranger to big fights. Despite having only 14 career fights, Griffin has already faced a huge variety of top-level fighters. His only two losses are to top contender Frankie Edgar and former Lightweight champion Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk.
On top of that, he has garnered wins against the likes of Urijah Faber, Duane Ludwig, Clay Guida, Thiago Tavares, Gleison Tibau, and Marcus Aurelio, all forces to be reckoned with. While he does tend to win by decision, no one can claim that Griffin isn’t also exciting, as is evidenced by his string of Fight of the Night bonuses.
Ultimately, Griffin’s experience level, cardio, powerful wrestling, and world-class training camp will prove too much for dos Anjos to overcome. While he is no doubt a skilled grappler, dos Anjos is going to have a lot of problems generating movement under Griffin’s smothering top control.
I see Griffin riding this fight out mainly inside Dos Anjo’s guard, keeping him at bay with ground and pound en route to the unanimous decision.
Fight Night 18: Junie Browning vs. Cole Miller Prediction
March 27, 2009
Junie Browning vs. Cole Miller
The opening bout of the televised card pits well-known Ultimate Fighter bad boy Junie Allen Browning against American Top Team submission wiz Cole “Magrino” Miller.
Miller has been a staple at 155 pounds for a few years now, while Browning will be looking to replace his reputation as an all-talk TV show jackass with a reputation as a real fighter.
Anyone who saw The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 may well wonder why Browning is on the card at all. On the show, he wowed audiences with his poor behavior and repeated violent outbursts. As memorable as his antics were, his fights were nothing to write home about. He looked middling at best in his win over Rolando Delgado, and looked worse than that in his loss to Efrain Escudero.
On the finale show, Browning’s striking and grappling both looked substantially improved, but one decent fight against another loser from the show hardly seems to justify his inclusion on the televised card. The name of the game is ratings, though, and so throwing a glass cup at your teammates is just as good as throwing a mean high kick in the Octagon, apparently.
Luckily for anyone who takes the sport of Mixed Martial Arts seriously, Cole Miller seems poised to halt Browning’s UFC stint before it even gets rolling. Put simply, Miller is a far better fighter than Browning. He has far more experience against better competition, has a much more complete skill set, and is a far more mature human being. To dissect this bout would be meaningless, as it’s nothing but a spectacle designed to drum up some extra points in the ratings. Miller is there because he deserves it, Browning is a sideshow.
The results will play this out, as Miller will submit Browning, probably in the opening round.
