UFC 94: St. Pierre for Canadian Fans

January 29, 2009

There has never been a better time to be an MMA fan in Canada. With TKO putting on quality shows, Canadian stars like Patrick Cote making a splash in UFC, and hometown hero Georges St. Pierre topping a lot of pound for pound lists, Canadian fans have never had more to cheer about. And now, thanks to one of the world’s top wagering sites, Sportsbook.com, MMA fans up north have even more to be excited about. Recently, Sportsbook opened their doors to Canadian gamblers, which means that now Canada’s triumphs in the fight world can yield more than just national pride, they can yield real profits for you.

The timing couldn’t be better. With Georges St. Pierre headed into arguably the biggest fight in UFC history with his rival BJ Penn, Canadians will be able to show more than moral support for their favorite son, throwing down some money on their boy and potentially reaping profits. Although St. Pierre is a slight favorite as far as betting lines go, the majority of fight pundits have picked him to retain his Welterweight Title, so a bet on St. Pierre could still pay off relatively well.

With the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter pitting Americans against the British, how far behind can a USA vs. Canada season be? Canadian fans familiar with TKO fighters could easily parlay their knowledge into gambling success now, thanks to this new availability. And with a whole slate of Canadian fighters already inside the Octagon, the profit margins on Canadians alone could be huge. Of course, there’s no rule that says you have to bet on Canadians. Tired of seeing your native fighters lose to Americans? Still feeling depressed about Kalib Starnes? Soften the blow by at least making some money off it. Nothing makes a hometown loss easier to deal with than a fat wad of cash, so make use of this new offer to line your pockets!

Predictions for UFC 94

January 24, 2009

For the Main Event we have our Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn prediction page

Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva

Pats Prediction

  • Machida is a very tactical fighter and almost ghost like moving object that can get in and out somehow without taking much punishment.  Silva an extremely well rounded and powerful puncher will most likely have to chase down Machida.  The question is will he be able to catch Machida and make him exchange with him? Machida takes alot of heat for his style, but it works for him.  I see Machida once again avoiding Silva’s power and doing enough for a unanimous decision victory.

 - Machida vs. Silva Odds

Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones

Pats Prediction

  • Jon Jones thus-far is undefeated in his MMA career and 1-0 in the UFC.  He will by far be facing his toughest fight to date in Stephan Bonnar.  I think this fight will come down to experience where Bonnar has much more.  Jones will probably look to strike with Bonnar, but will eventually be overwhelmed.  The American Psycho via second round TKO.

 - Bonnar vs. Jones Odds

Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida

Pats Prediction

  • This will be a very interesting and entertaining fight that could possible be fight of the night runner up material.  Nate Diaz who’s stand up is very questionable will need to get Guida down on the mat.  Guida  while not a strong striker himself, though I will give him the advantage in that department.  Guida does however have very sold wrestling that will make Diaz work that much harder to secure a take down. Diaz will take some punishment, but will find a way to get Guida down and work out one of his submissions in the middle of round three.

 - Diaz vs. Guida Odds

Karo Parisyan vs. Dong Hyun Kim

Pats Prediction

  • The Heat will have his hands full against the undefeated Korean fighter Dong Hyun Kim. Karo hasn’t fought since early last year when he was TKO’d by Thiago Alves will look to get his name back in the mix. A win over The Stun Gun will be a step in the right direction. Hyun Kim is 2-0 in the UFC with wins over Jason Day and Matt Brown. I believe Karo’s experience and skill set will be the difference in this fight as he will pull out a unanimous decision victory.

 - Parisyan vs. Hyun Kim Odds

Preliminary Card Quick Picks

Sportsbook.com Odds

  • Jon Fitch over Akihiro Gono via unanimous decision

  • Thiago Tavares over Manny Gamburyan via second round KO

  • Christian Wellisch over Jake O’Brien via first round KO

  • Matt Arroyo over Daniel Cramer via unanimous decision

UFC 94: Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn Prediction

January 24, 2009

Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn

The main event of the evening is a superfight of epic proportions, as current welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre and current Lightweight champion BJ “The Prodigy” Penn will do battle for the second time.  Odds are -180 St. Pierre / +150 Penn Currently

The last time these two met, St. Pierre narrowly avoided disaster, capturing a razor-thin split decision after being manhandled in the first round. Has St. Pierre grown enough as a fighter to handle Penn’s potent offense? Can Penn, one of only two men to hold UFC titles in two weight classes, become the first man to hold two titles simultaneously?

Georges St. Pierre is considered by many to be the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world. His combination of effective striking, good submissions, excellent wrestling, and freakish athleticism make him one of the most formidable fighters ever to compete in UFC. St. Pierre overwhelms his opponents with aggression and pure athletic ability, never giving them room to manuever since he is so dangerous in every aspect of the game. The only chink in St. Pierre’s armor may be his mental game. In the past, St. Pierre has looked shaky at times in the biggest fights.

In his first fight with Matt Hughes, he was armbarred out of nowhere in a contest he was dominating up to that point. This suspect mental preparation may be compounded by his first fight with Penn. In that fight, Penn teed off on St. Pierre in brutal fashion in the first round. The second two rounds saw Penn completely gassed out, and St. Pierre won both, but with minimal offense. St. Pierre won the fight, but Penn did far more damage and looked more dangerous, so St. Pierre will have to find a way to make himself confident if he hopes to hold on to his title.

BJ Penn, a jiu jitsu prodigy in the most literal sense, is without a doubt one of the greatest fighters in MMA history. A natural lightweight, Penn has fought in three or four different weight classes, holding his own against world class fighters who outweigh him by more than 30 pounds. With precise, powerful boxing and unmatched grappling skills, Penn’s abilities are almost unmatched in the world. The only question about Penn has always been his seriousness.

In his first fight with St. Pierre, Penn showed up fat, and freely admitted that he did not even have a training camp before the fight. After consecutive losses to St. Pierre and Matt Hughes, though, Penn decided to take his career more seriously, upping his training regimen and even hiring a nutritionist. Since then, Penn has looked unstoppable at 155 pounds, destroying Top 10 fighters Joe Stevenon and Sean Sherk with almost comical ease.

In the end, Penn’s rededication to his trade is going to make all the difference. He completely dominated St. Pierre for the first round of their first encounter before losing his gas. There is no way St. Pierre could have survived another round of such intense punishment, so if BJ can just keep his pace going past the first round or two, he should be able to overwhelm St. Pierre again.

Penn by TKO, round 3

UFC 94: Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva

January 24, 2009

Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva

The semi main event showcases two undefeated Light Heavyweights duking it out in a fight that will almost definitely determine who gets the next shot at the 205 pound title. Lyoto Machida has made a strong argument for himself thusfar, handily defeating everyone placed in front of him so far and generally making his opponents look foolish in the process. Thiago Silva has also looked unstoppable thusfar, though, so this fight should be one for the ages.   Odds are -285 Machida / +225 Silva currently

Lyoto Machida is easily the most talented fighter ever to be hated as much as he is. His style, which is almost painfully precise and technical, is not always a favorite with the crowds or the viewing audience. It is, however, always ridiculously effective. A karate practicioner, Machida’s standup is completely different from the kickboxing style usually displayed in MMA. Machida’s success is due, in equal parts, to his offensive ability and his ability to utterly thwart the offense of his opponents.

As Joe Rogan (very) frequently points out, Machida is one of the most “elusive” fighters in the sport, stringing his opponents along and confounding them before stepping in, throwing a few surgical blows, and then disappearing from his foe’s range of fire. His ground game is also quite advanced, so he is never overmatched, but he prefers to keep it standing.

Thiago Silva is something of an anomaly. A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt with a world class ground game, he nevertheless prefers to stand and bang with his opponents, using his brutal muay thai and devastating clinch work to overwhelm them. Once a member of Chute Boxe Academy, Silva has really come into his own as a member of the extremely successful American Top Team. He can end a fight from any position, but it is going to take more than raw ability to best a tactical fighter like Machida. Silva will have to find a way to remain active and keep pushing the fight without getting roped into chasing Machida around.

I see Machida taking this fight the same way he takes most of his fights: picking his spots, backpedaling, playing the waiting game, and patiently exploiting every tiny opening. Silva is a constant threat to finish a fight, but you have to have a target to hit, and Machida is world renowned for not providing a target.

Machida by protracted, tentative unanimous decision.

UFC 94: Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones

January 24, 2009

Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones

Stephan Bonnar, one of the breakout stars from the original season of The Ultimate Fighter and one half of the “Greatest Fight in UFC History”, is set to face off with super rookie Jon Jones, who has somehow achieved a professional record of 7-0 after making his debut in April of 2008.  Odds are -170 Bonnar / +140 Jones currently

Clearly, Jones has had a busy first year. He captured six professional wins against unknown competition between April and July of last year before making his UFC debut in August, where he earned a unanimous decision against the talented Andre Gusmao. Primarily a striker but with some ground skills too, Jones is going to probably want to box against Bonnar, who has good wrestling and submissions.

The difference in this fight is going to be experience and training. Bonnar has been in a number of wars with good opponents, and trains at the illustrious Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas. Jones has thusfar relied on his natural abilities to garner him wins, but against a more skilled fighter with more experience and better preparation, he is finally going to meet his match.

Bonnar by TKO, round 2.

UFC 94: Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida Prediction

January 24, 2009

Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida

In an exciting lightweight matchup that could definitely have some future title implications, Stockton’s own Nathan Diaz is set to face off with hard-working veteran Clay “The Carpenter” Guida. Diaz has been riding high ever since his bizarre Ultimate Fighter 5 win, but Guida is a tough opponent for anyone, so if Diaz wants to keep his streak going he is going to have his hands full.

Clay Guida, more than anything, is known for his heart and determination. He is the kind of fighter who not only never gives up, but never stops moving forward and taking the fight to his opponent. A well rounded fighter who is competent at every aspect of the fight game but spectacular at none, Guida’s success stems from his refusal to ever stop pressing the issue inside the Octagon. His biggest strength in terms of skill is definitely his wrestling, which is powerful and explosive.

That said, against Diaz he would be better served keeping the fight standing and trying to constantly create pressure, as Diaz’s standup is questionable but he is extremely dangerous on the ground.

The younger brother of former UFC fighter Nick Diaz, Nate’s style is extremely similar to his brother’s. Diaz holds a brown belt under Cesar Gracie, which is more prestigious than a black belt from many other instructors, as he has proven inside the Octagon repeatedly. His standup, while not horrible, is extremely awkward and his tendency to keep his chin up could prove problematic.

Stylistically, this is an extremely interesting fight, because Diaz has all the skills necessary to end the fight on the ground with a submission, but may lack the skills necessary to get the fight to the ground to begin with.

There is no question that Guida is the superior wrestler, so if Diaz wants to take him down he is going to have to use some unconventional methods. His best strategy will be to use his awkward boxing to keep Guida unsteady, and try to close into a clinch and score a judo throw or leg trip.

I see Diaz’s winning ways continuing in this bout, but not until he has been roughed up a good bit first. Guida should control this one early with strikes and wrestling, but Diaz is too slick on the ground to be denied.

Diaz by submission, round 3.

UFC 94: Karo Parisyan vs. Dong Hyun Kim Prediction

January 24, 2009

Karo Parisyan vs. Dong Hyun Kim

In the opening bout of the evening, skilled judoka Karo “The Heat” Parisyan will look to get back to his winning ways against Korean standout Dong Hyun Kim. This is a must-win for Parisyan, who was once considered the top contender at 170 pounds, but who has since seen his stock plummet.

Parisyan, best known for his explosive high-impact judo throws, has had a tough road in UFC lately. At one point he was in position to get the next shot at then-champion Matt Hughes’ Welterweight Title, but an injury sustained in training shunted him off to the sidelines of the title picture, and an upset loss to Diego Sanchez removed him from it altogether. Karo looked to be getting back on track, stringing together three quality wins, but in his last outing his title dreams were upset again courtesy of a shocking TKO stoppage at the hands of Thiago Alves that many, Karo included, felt was premature.

Now, his place in the Welterweight hierarchy is in question, and a win against Kim is absolutely necessary if he ever wants another opportunity at capturing gold. Luckily for him, Parisyan brings a dangerous attack and a well-rounded skillset with him to the Octagon. While not a world-class striker, his hands are decent, and his takedowns are feared throughout the sport. In addition, he comes into this fight with a huge experience advantage, not only in terms of fights but quality of opposition.

His opponent, Dong Hyun Kim, is an undefeated Korean prospect with dangerous striking and solid takedowns of his own. He impressed in his UFC debut, destroying Jason Tan with brutal elbows, but was nearly upset by a game Matt Brown in his last trip to the Octagon.

Kim’s best bet at keeping his undefeated record intact is to keep this fight not only standing, but at a distance. In a kickboxing match, Kim is probably the more dangerous fighter, but if this one moves to the clinch there is a good chance Karo will launch Kim with one of his trademark judo throws.

Ultimately, Karo’s well-roundedness, experience, and aggression should allow him to control the young Korean, neutralizing his standup, scoring a few throws, and controlling the action on the ground. Kim has a bright future in this sport, but Karo has a bright past and present.

Parisyan by unanimous decision.

Affliction 2: Lindland vs. Belfort Knock Out Video

January 24, 2009

Here is the video between Lindland and Belfort

………………………

Here is the fight between Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort at Affliction Day of Reckoning. This fight went all of 40 seconds as Belfort landed a devistating left that sent Lindland to the floor and then backed it up with a shot to the temple of Lindland. This is the worst KO I have seen, as Lindland cannot even get up or come back to reality for quite some time.

Affliction 2: Sobral vs. Sokoudjou Video

Here is the fight between Renato Sobral vs. Thierry Sokoudjou at Affliction Day of Reckoning. Sokoudjou looked pretty solid in round one, but then Babalu took it to the mat in the second round and secured a D'Arce choke on Sokoudjou.
