UFC 81 picks - UFC 81 predictions
January 26, 2008

UFC 81 takes place on Saturday, February 2nd in Las Vegas at 10:00 PM. Our picks for UFC 79 and UFC 80 both made our readers some nice money. If this is your first time here, note that I bet mostly for value and play a lot of underdogs. I also do not bet on every fight, I just bet fights where I see an edge for us as bettors.
Brock Lesnar (-155) vs. Frank Mir (+125)
- Well the anticipation continues to rocket for the UFC debut of Brock Lesnar. Will he be the next big star in MMA? Or will he be overwhelmed by the submission specialist Frank Mir? Well it’s tough to tell at this point, but thats what makes this match so intriguing. I always tend to stay away from favorites who have too many unknowns coming into a fight. Whether it be inexperience, rustiness or an injury….I just don’t like betting on favorites with too many unknowns. Well in this fight, Brock has tons of unknowns and he’s also a -155 favorite. I’m going to pray that Frank Mir did some cardio work leading up to this fight, and will be in good shape. If he did, then I think a bet on him at +125 vs. someone new to the cage is a great value play.
- My bet : $100 on Frank Mir at +125 to win $125 (odds from Bodog)
Antonio “big nog” Rodrigo Nogueira (-180) vs. Tim Sylvia (+140)
- This fight really has made my head spin. On one hand, I think Big Nog is the better fighter and I think he will win this bout. But on the other hand my betting knowledge continues to tell me that Sylvia is the right pick due to the good value, and the large amount of people betting on Big Nog.
- My bet : $100 on Tim Sylvia at +140 to win $140.
Kyle Bradley (+400) vs. Chris Lytle (-600)
- Who came up with these odds? First of all I love jumping on underdogs who are +400 and over. Over the longhaul betting against the huge favorites is going to turn a profit. Kyle Bradley is a decent fighter, and Chris Lytle has never been the type of fighter that would warrant these odds. This is a great value play on Kyle Bradley. If you play at BetUS, you can get the odds at +500 for Bradley.
- My bet : $25 on Kyle Bradley at +400 to win $100
Alan Belcher (+100) vs. Ricardo Almeida (-130)
- Belcher is coming off a 2-1 2007 with wins against Kalib Starnes and Sean Salmon. Belcher has shown some steady improvement over the past two years. Ricardo Almeida is 8-2 in his MMA career with his most recent win coming in May of 2004. That’s a long time to be out of the octagon, and I think it will show in this fight. Belcher looks to be a good play at +100
- My bet : $50 on Alan Belcher at +100 to win $50.

UFC 80 betting action surprises online sportsbooks
January 24, 2008

UFC 80 went down last Saturday in Newcastle, England with a relatively low amount of hype and only one household name on the card. Even though the card didn’t draw in casual UFC fans, they managed to surprise the online sportsbooks with the amount of money wagered on the afternoon event.
Brett Hanson, PR representative for Bodog, stated to MMABettingBlog.com that “UFC 80 surprisingly exceeded our expectations. This card was not high on star power, but after all the betting was said and done we only saw about a 7% drop in overall betting action from the last non U.S. based UFC fight (UFC 75)”. UFC 75 was a highly touted and star studded fight card which had a large betting draw from U.S. bettors.
Nick Kalikas, head oddsmaker for the BetCRIS sportsbook network, stated that “UFC 77, 78 and 79 (all U.S. events) had only about 20% more betting action than UFC 80.” He also stated that “Even though their was a slight decline in overall action for the International event, the numbers are very promising. The popularity of UFC wagering continues to grow and pick up steam with every event.”
Besides being a non U.S. based event, there was also one of the bigger boxing matches of the year going on Saturday night with Roy Jones Jr. taking on Felix Trinidad. In regards to boxing, Kalekis also said that “With the exception of boxing’s mega fights such as Jones/Trinidad and De La Hoya/Mayweather, the UFC has surpassed boxing in overall action on a consistent basis.”

Brock vs Frank overview
- Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir will be squaring off on February 2nd as the main event at UFC 81. Lesnar is a former WWE star and college wrestling standout, while Mir has a 10-3 MMA record with wins over Tim Sylvia, Antoni Hardonk and Dan Christison. Betting odds and analysis for this fight are below…
Odds for Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir
Analysis of Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir
- The betting odds for this matchup have stunned many MMA bettors. Brock Lesnar opened as a huge -205 favorite, with the veteran Frank Mir coming in as a +165 underdog. Despite not having any real MMA experience, Brock Lesnar has a very good wrestling background. He was a two time NCAA All American wrestler with a 106-5 career collegiate record. The problem with betting on Brock, is that there are way TOO MANY unknowns with him. Is Brock going to be able to take a punch? How’s Brock’s stand up game? Will Brock be able to counter any of Mir’s great BJJ skills? This is way too many unknowns for a -150 favorite.
- Frank Mir is a submission specialist who has tons of experience in the octagon and is a former UFC heavyweight champion. Frank Mir’s win over Tim Sylvia a few years back shows a lot about how Frank can handle someone who’s bigger and stronger than him. On the other hand, if you’re ready to unload some big money on Frank, you should also look at his cardio problems. Mir has gassed a few times in his past couple fights, and many people believe if he comes in out of shape, Brock will probably out work him.
- I think the overall value in this fight lies with Frank Mir. A veteran fighter at +120 against a complete newbie to MMA seems to be the best wager at this point…

Tim Sylvia vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira betting preview
January 19, 2008

Fight overview
- Tim Sylvia and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will battle it out for the interim heavyweight title at UFC 81 in Las Vegas on February 2nd, 2008. Sylvia is 24-3 in his MMA career, while “Big Nog” is 30-4-1.
Betting odds for Sylvia vs. Nogueira
- Nogueira (-180)
- Sylvia (+150)
Fight analysis of Sylvia vs. Nogueira
- Well this seems to be another fight where everyone is writing off Tim Sylvia. Yes he might not be the most exciting fighter in the world, but the guy just seems to win. He’s notched up wins over Brandon Vera, Jeff Monson and Andrei Arlovski (2x). Sylvia has a great stand up game which will serve him well against Big Nog, because Tim definitely will not want this fight to happen on the mat.
- Big Nog on the other hand has arguably the greatest ground game in MMA besides BJ Penn. Nog will most likely try to take this fight to the ground and finish off Sylvia there.
- As for the betting odds on this fight, I think Sylvia is being a little undervalued. For a +150 favorite, he really has a great chance to take this fight. The value definitely lies with Tim right now…

Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott preview
- Kimbo Slice comes into this fight as a very big favorite. The odds really aren’t justified as Kimbo only has two fights under his belt. Kimbo’s MMA wins have both come against “cans” in Ray Mercer and Bo Cantrell. He has been training for the past year with MMA star Bas Rutten. Despite being in his thirties, Kimbo has been improving and training harder than ever says Bas. Forty three year old Tank Abbott has pretty much been horrendous in the ring since 1998. His record since ‘98 is an appalling 1-7 and he looks in worse shape every time we see him. On the other hand, Tank’s experience could come into play in this bout and grabbing him at +300 is pretty good betting value. Either way the fight ends up, its sure to be a hell of a bout.

Boxing betting - How to bet on boxing
January 9, 2008

Boxing betting overview
Betting on boxing is a great way to add excitement to your fight nights. Boxing betting is easy to understand and even easier to place a bet. In this piece, we’ll go over the following…
- Boxing odds
- Types of boxing bets
- Where to bet on boxing
Understanding boxing odds
Boxing odds are moneyline odds. Unlike a sport like football which has a spread (Ex. Patriots -7), boxing has moneylines which I’ll explain with an example.
- Floyd Mayweather Jr (-260)
- Ricky Hatton (+200)
In this fight, Floyd Mayweather Jr is the favorite at -260. This means that for every $2.60 you bet on Floyd, you would win $1 (assuming he wins the fight). So if you bet $260 on Floyd and he wins the fight, you win $100 profit.
Since Floyd is the favorite, this means that Ricky Hatton is the underdog. For every $1 you bet on Ricky Hatton, you will win $2 if he wins. So if you bet $100 on Hatton and he wins, you’ll win $200. If you bet $100 and he loses, then you’re out $100.
Types of boxing bets
Moneyline fighter vs. fighter bets - This is the main bet that we described above.
Draw bet - On most fights, you can bet if you think the fight will end in a draw.
Over/under round betting - This type of bet means that you will be betting whether the fight will go over or under the amount of rounds stated by the sportsbook. The rounds are usually set at 10-11.
KO or stoppage bet - A KO or stoppage bet means you are betting a particular fighter to stop the fight via knockout or stoppage. These bets usually have good value for a bettor.
