UFC 81 betting odds – UFC 81 odds
December 30, 2007
The betting odds for UFC 81 are now out at online sportsbook’s Bodog and BetUS. The big matchup of the night showcases the UFC debut of Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir. Brock Lesnar has taken a lot of heat for being the favorite in this matchup, considering that it is his first true MMA fight. While I think Brock may do well, there’s no reason he should be favored here. Frank Mir will probably get a lot of betting action between now and the fight, so if you are planning on betting on Frank at UFC 81, I would do so ASAP.
Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir odds
- Brock Lesnar (-140)
- Frank Mir (+110)
- Over 1.5 rounds (+180)
- Under 1.5 rounds (-240)
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Tim Sylvia odds
- Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (-200)
- Tim Sylvia (+160)

UFC 79 picks – UFC 79 predictions
December 21, 2007

UFC 79 is right around the corner, so its time for my UFC 79 picks to be published. As of now, we have odds available for 3 fights, so I’ll go over those 3 in this post.
Chuck Liddell (-105) vs. Wanderlei Silva (-125)
- Chuck Liddell has been off his game for his past two fights and bettors have been taking note. According to an interview I did with Bodog this past week, the bets are coming in at a 5-1 rate in favor of Wanderlei Silva. That is a huge rate for a fight that has pretty even odds. As you know I love to go against the public opinion, and this situation is stacking up perfectly. This looks like a great spot for Liddell, so Im gonna put $210 on Chuck.
- My bet : $210 on Liddell to win $200 at Bodog
Matt Hughes (+190) vs. Georges St. Pierre (-240)
- Georges St. Pierre is a decent favorite in this fight, and he should be. The oddsmakers for this fight are giving Matt Hughes approximately a 30-35% chance to win this fight. I think Hughes should at least have a 40% chance to win this bout, so I do see some value in betting Matt Hughes. I’m gonna make a small play on Hughes in this fight.
- My bet : $50 on Hughes +190 to win $95 at BetUS
Lyoto Machida (-130) vs. Rameau Sokoudjou (EV)
- I really have no opinion either way on this bout, and I’m not gonna place a bet. I think the line is just right so there is really no value to gain by betting on this fight. If I had a gun to my head, I’d take Rameau at +100.
Melvin Guillard (-225) vs. Rich Clementi (+185)
- I sort of like Melvin Guillard in this spot, but Im not sure I will bite on the -225 line. Melvin Guillard is an awesome fighter with a 20-6-2 record and has shown some great improvements in his past 2-3 fights. If I can find a -105 line I will put $50 on Melvin
- My bet : No bet as of now
Sao Palelei (-140) vs. Eddie Sanchez (+110)
- Ughh what an ugly fight this is. I’m not really sure why this is even a main card fight. Sao Paleleihasn’t been in the ring for what seems like a century and Eddie Sanchez hasn’t really shown us anything to prove he’s a good enough fighter to bet on. There’s too many unknowns with this fight to make a smart bet on it, so I’ll pass.
Luis Cane (-200) vs. James Irvin (+160)
- Luis Cane is a bit of a mystery to me. He has a great MMA record of 7-0 but I’ve yet to see much of him. James Irvin is coming back from a knee injury that put him out of the loop for a while. Before the injury Irvin had some solid wins and I think this will be a big comeback fight for him. He’s probably been itching to get back in the octagon, so this bout will mean a lot to him.
- My bet : $25 on James Irvin (+160) at Bodog
Other fights
- I have no opinion on the last three fights and won’t be putting any money on them.

Wanderlei Silva gets all the early betting action for UFC 79
December 17, 2007

The action around the web is beginning to heat up for UFC 79 and Matt Hughes and Wanderlei Silva are drawing the most betting action thus far. According to Bodog, bets are coming in at a 5-1 pace for the Axe Murderer Wanderlei Silva to beat Chuck Liddell. It seems by the numbers that the betting public is truly writing off Chuck Liddell at this point. I think many MMA fans are weary of betting on Chuck due to his recent losses to Keith Jardine and Quinton Jackson. However, Wanderlei Silva is also in the same boat as he has lost his past two bouts to Dan Henderson and Mirko Cro Cop.
In the main event of the night, Matt Hughes as a +160 underdog is holding a slight edge in betting action over his opponent Georges St. Pierre in the main event. This was actually a surprise to me due to the fact that GSP is a reasonable favorite (-200), and also GSP has been drawing the most attention for this bout in the MMA media.
The only other fight to have odds for UFC 79 is Lyoto Machida and Rameau Sokoudjou. The betting action for this fight so far has been 50/50.

Boxing trounces The Ultimate Fighter 6 in betting action
December 10, 2007
On Saturday December 8th, mixed martial arts and boxing both aired at the same time with a full card of fights. The UFC’s Ultimate Fighter reality show on Spike TV featured a main bout between Roger Huerta and Clay Guida, while boxing had a pay per view event featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Ricky Hatton.
Online sportsbook Bodoglife.com made a statement to MMAbettingblog.com that
“The betting handle for Ultimate Fighter 6 was small. Huerta and Guida was the most bet on fight of the event, but in terms of revenues it only drew what we normally see for a preliminary match of a UFC pay per view”
They went on to compare the handle for The Ultimate Fighter and the PPV boxing event of the night.
“On a night where the UFC went head to head with the most hyped boxing matches of the year, the UFC was the forgotten event in the bettor’s eyes. Even the Roger Huerta-Clay Guida fight failed to outdraw the Jeff Lacy-Peter Manfredo Jr. undercard.”
The outcome of the betting revenues is a bit shocking to me. I understand that the TUF finale was not a PPV event, and had it been a PPV event with bigger fighters the betting handles would have obviously been much higher. However, when the Bodog sportsbook doesn’t even draw as much betting action for the main TUF fight as boxing does for an undercard bout, I think it shows how much more betting is ingrained in the boxing culture.
Mixed martial arts is still a very new sport to many people. The majority of the public probably does not even realize they can bet on MMA fights. As MMA continues to gain popularity, and betting becomes a more acceptable part of the culture, I think we will see a rise in the amount of betting action handled on MMA events. With Chuck Liddell fighting at UFC 79, the December 29th event is sure to compete with any sport in terms of betting action. We’ll have to wait and see…
