My mixed martial arts betting strategy

July 21, 2007

Almost every person who bets has a type of style or “system” they use to pick the team/fighter they want to bet on. I’ll first state that there is no one correct way to handicap a fight. Finding a style that works for you is the most important aspect of betting on mixed martial arts fights. If you try to bounce all over the place, and bet with different theories and systems, chances are you’ll end up broke.

How to bet on UFC fights

Unlike football as basketball where there are point spreads (ex. -7, +13.5) UFC fights have odds which are called moneylines. A moneyline is basically a way for the sportsbooks to even out the betting public. So for example if Chuck Liddell was fighting a no name guy in his first fight, Liddell would be a HUGE favorite, probably around -4400 or so (44 to 1). If there was no moneyline, you could just bet on the favorite everytime, and become a millionaire pretty quickly.

There’s some interesting talk going on about the Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell proposed fight. Silva is now saying he did not deny the fight, and that Dana White is lying.

Cage Rage 22 odds

July 14, 2007

Cage Rage 22 odds were posted today at Sportsbook.com and Bodog . The fight is taking place in England, and I believe it starts at 2 PM. I forgot it was across the pond, otherwise I would have tried to get the odds up a bit earlier. The books seem to be very slow on posting odds for non UFC events though.

Bodog Fight odds released for July 14th fight

July 12, 2007

Bodog has released odds for their upcoming BodogFight on Saturday, July 14th at Sovereign Bank Arena in New Jersey. I really haven’t paid much attention to BodogFight yet, but I’m gonna try and find a place to watch this on Saturday. I really like Eddie Alvarez in the main bout, but at -600, I’m gonna pass on him. That’s just too much juice for me. I’ll post my picks on Saturday for all the bouts…

UFC to surpass boxing in betting revenues

July 11, 2007

I had an interview in a recent press release about the UFC taking over boxing in terms of betting revenues. Here are some great quotes from it.

“The handle on mixed martial arts has been steadily growing over the past 2 years. 2007 will mark the first year that MMA handle will surpass boxing,” says Bodog.com’s sportsbook manager. He also stated that in terms of betting handle, there’s a larger amount of bettors when big name fighters are involved in the UFC event. “The Jackson vs. Liddell main event accounted for two thirds of the entire handle for UFC 71, whereas Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz was responsible for only a third of the UFC 73 handle, with the Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fight and the other title fights combining for another 50%.”

That was a big statement, and puts into perspective the amount of people wagering on UFC’s events. To see how much UFC has grown in just the past 6-12 months is incredible.

A few odds for UFC 75 have been posted already. The fight will be held on Saturday, September 8th in London England. I’m sure the rest of the odds will be released after UFC 74.

Upcoming UFC fights confirmed

July 9, 2007

The Star Ledger in New Jersey is confirming news that a rematch between Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans will happen.

“It wasn’t my best performance and Rashad is tough as hell,” Ortiz (16-5-1) said. “He was a tougher guy than I thought he was going to be. Since it’s a draw … we can do it again.”

Ortiz will get his wish. UFC president Dana White said yesterday that Ortiz-Evans II will happen in a matter of months.
